Audacity must close...

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity must close...

Post by mlignoul » Fri May 30, 2008 10:31 pm

I am using Vista (ugg) and occassionaly when I click the stop button after recording 1 hour and 30 minutes when I click the 'stop' button I get an error that says there is an error and Audacity must close. When I reopen Audacity says I have some 'temp files' but if they are whole I am not sure what to do to convert them to an mp3 files. Seems like it has something to do with Outlook meeting reminders but that is just an un-scientific guess. Any advice, I have recorded the same file 3 times today and I would like to be able to actually save it...Thanks

When Audacity crashes, it pretty much writes the last chapter of your show. There is a crash recovery document...

http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... shRecovery

...but nobody has ever made it work.

I'm much more interested in why it's crashing. Are any of your hard drives filling up? It doesn't have to be the one you're capturing to. Any full hard drive will mess things up. When was the last time you defragmented your hard drive? A heavily fragmented hard drive will not perform captures--especially long ones.

When was the last time you ran the heavy virus check that makes you stop using the machine for a couple of hours? The one that runs in the background is OK, but you can sneak around that one. The other thing you might try is disconnect your machine from the internet and turn the virus protection off for the capture.

Make sure you turn it back on.

Hi:
I am another user with HP9704 PC experiencing same problem. the only difference is that it happens a few minutes /seconds into recording. (must close audacity).

version used is 1.2.4
I am using Home premium edition of Vista

My system has 250 gb HD, 3gb RAM, 2ghz core 2 duo
C drive has over 50 gb free
and D drive has about 40 gb free

I used to use it in XP before and for the most part trouble free.

the way I use it is as follows.

I usually open two instances of audacity. I start recording on one. Stop it after recording a song and start the second song and the second window and save the first one as MP3 while the other one is recording.

I use Alexis Mixer with usb out as the input for the recording and this is in a live situation. Don't get a second chance to make the recording again.

I tried using 1.3 (beta version) but with the usb, it has failed to allow me to record on the second window.
the details of the crash is attached
Audacity 1.2.4

Hello, I have the exact same problem as sri, and get the exact problem details. My computer has similar specs. A whole bunch of power and Vista Home Premium. No chance to save my work. I've used Audacity since forever with XP and never got any issues. With Vista, it worked alright before service pack 1, but hasn't since. I thought the issue would be resolved by now, but I guess it wasn't as common a problem as I thought.

Basically the same thing, only in spanish. Sorry, but that's what I get from the machine. I thought of deleting ntdll.dll and reinstalling, but I don't know if it's a library that comes with Audacity or it's from the system, 'cause I might screw things up more. Thanks in advance.

Quick work around, while a solution is found. Instead of clicking "stop" when you're done recording, hit "pause" first, and then "stop". At least that way I could get the file saved.

You may also find that it helps if you save the totally empty project to its target filename prior to doing any recording. That way Audacity doesn't use its temp folder to store the project while recording, but instead writes directly to where the project will be stored.

If it uses the temp files then on Save project it has to copy the files over from temp to the target area - so you should also find this quicker to Save on completion of the recording.

Hi guys,

I just joined this forum to post about the exact same problem, I'm pleased ( :? ) that I'm not the only one!

I use Audacity to record my vinyl records and have been using it for years, I have even tried other programs but always come back to Audacity. However, I recently changed my laptop to one with good ol' Vista Home Premium and Audacity 8 times out of 10 will crash as soon as I hit stop after recording an album! Very, very frustrating!! Needless to say, like the others here my new laptop has plenty of memory, hard disc space and power. If anyone needs any more details from me then just ask away, but it's basically the same situation as the others above. Occasionally Audacity will crash a few seconds into recording, but mostly it's after recording a whole LP.

I had already tried hitting "pause" before "stop" at the end of a recording, this seemed to help but I would still get a high number of crashes. I have tried recording with no other applications running, no difference. I have tried re-booting after each record, a pain in the arse and no help really.

However, thanks for your suggestion Waxcylinder, that sounds sensible and I'll give it a go now. Meanwhile, I really hope the Audacity guys can get this sorted quickly as Audacity is such a great piece of software...and I've got loads of new vinyl I want to get on my iPod :D

Edited to Add: Tried saving before recording, still crashes when I hit stop. Pleease help this is driving me nuts!

Workaround: run in windows compatibility mode.

Post by gber » Mon Sep 22, 2008 3:51 am

Audacity stopped crashing for me when I set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP sp2.

Open c:program filesaudacity. Right click on audacity.exe, choose properties. Goto Compatibility tab. Check first option and in drop down box select Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

So you set Audacity to run in XP (SP2) although you're using Vista?

Just wanted to confirm that before giving it a go....
