We had such a long struggle with that problem:

Turns out that it's a Lenovo hardware problem and no software nor external card can help this.

My question - anyone using ASUS notebook can confirm, that recording with Audacity with internal or external sound card doesn't bring any problems? In "Recording" options, do you find "What You Hear" or "Stereo Mix" bars?

I'd appreciate any answers, don't want to buy another useless notebook (i need it to make music!)

I doubt you can generalise, it depends what sound device ASUS bundle into the motherboard, as to whether it will support stereo mix. I think you might be able to generalise that an older second hand notebook may be more likely to have a sound device/hardware that supports it.

I don't see any categorical evidence on the Thinkpads forum that a PCMCIA or even USB external sound card with stereo mix ability would not work. And it's stated there that VAC works, and quite likely the Freecorder browser toolbar recorder which works on the same principle does too. And if the laptop has a line-in, cabling from line-out to line-in and recording from line-in would work too.
