Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

can't save, export, or edit preferences

Post by xlukex » Tue May 27, 2008 3:19 pm

hi, i'm a new user and am probably missing something painfully obvious (although i have looked through the help file and the FAQs), but i've been working on my first project in Audacity and now find i can't save it, or export it. Everything in the file menu is greyed out bar 'new', 'open', 'recent files' and 'exit', and even the preferences option in the edit menu is greyed out. what am i missing here?
i'm a vista user, if that makes any difference.
thanks.

(Koz, I think that was a different question.)

What you describe about gray menus, is what happens while playback and recording.
May be you are playing or recording or doing some other kind of processing (no idea what)?
I would carefully try to playback for a second and stop the playback and if that
does not help, I would do the same with recording (assuming there is a bug).
May be, I would first look if there are any other open windows related to Audacity and close them
(can some effect DLL have a non-application-modal dialog? that one could be hiden below other windows).

Did this help ?

(Risky: try exit, hopefully it offers to save, it ususally does.)

It turns out my playback was paused, rather than stopped. Stopped it and the menu options are available. Thanks for your help, and a great program!
