Unable to Export to Mp3 - Crashes

I have searched high and low for a solution to this problem and cannot find one, nor can I find anyone saying they are having an identical problem. I actually came here intending to sign up for a new account only to discover I had signed up for one in December 2007 and posted with the same problem - that is how long this has been going on!
First, some basics: I am running Windows XP. I'm using Audacity 1.2.6. I have been using audacity for some time now without an issue. Then some time last year, I guess around December, it stopped exporting MP3 files correctly! I have the LAME file downloaded and in a directory and I have Audacity pointed towards the LAME file.
When I attempt to export to MP3 the ID tag box comes up. I fill in the blanks, and attempt to export, and the program crashes. A file ends up being created that says it's an mp3 but it is less than 100 bytes in size and is useless.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Audacity. I have deleted the LAME file, redownloaded it and redirected Audacity to the new download. The problem remains.
At this point for half a year I have been saving my Audacity programs to WAV format and then using a third party software to convert them to MP3. How can I fix this issue?!?!
