when i press the play button it depresses and the green bar pops up at the beginning of the track but it does not move. i can still record i just cant play. ok i just tried playing itunes and internet videos and none of them will play also.

Audacity doesn't support iTunes or video files, so that's why they won't play. Are you getting the same problem with WAVs and MP3s?

no i wasnt talking about those things in audacity. my output just isnt working for anything

You are not giving enough information.
What is your setup, and what are you doing (step by step).
It could be that you've plugged in a USB mic and it has hijacked your audio system, or any of a thousand other things.

i got tired of messing with my comp, so i just restarted and problem solved, ill post if it acts up again.

ok, now that that problems solved another one just had to pop up to make it impossible to work. now it wont pick up the input signal, i press record and that little blue line doesn't expand at all.

Try to reset everything to the previous values, when it was recording.
Perhaps use http://audacityteam.org/forum/viewtopic ... 870#p17870 as a checklist.

Do not forget to restart audacity if you change Prefs>AudioIO. Perhaps restart windows again.

And give more details if problem persists. Can you still record by Sound Recorder of Windows?
