Guitar muted when recording

I recently discovered Audacity and am using it to record myself on guitar and vocals. I've managed to get it set up via the Headphone socket of my amp to line input (blue port) on the computer and the mic direct to the mic (red) port on the computer. This records great but when I am playing the guitar is muted. It wont sound through the amp as the amp is muted by the Headphone socket being used, but I would have thought it should play through the computer speakers. They are connected to their usual (green) port.
Can I fix this within Vista or through Audacity?
Your help would be appreciated.

try plugging the guitar into the red port (mic port). your guitar should record then.
since you are using the 'headphone out' on your guitar amp and not a 'line out', the 'line in' on your PC probably won't pick upthe signal.

My impression is the machine will record from Mic-In or Line-In, but not both. It's not a production mixer. Further, a Guitar pickup or the Line-Out of a guitar amp will overload the Mic-In of a computer.
Mix ahead of time. Can you plug the microphone into the guitar Amp? Then plug the Amp into the Line-In of the computer. Switch to Line-In in the Windows Control Panels and record.
Much more of an adventure is to put the guitar track down first and then overdub the voice later. Some computers do this better than others.
