Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

If the Audacity Project still exists and the individual tracks are below 0dB, then the tracks could be remixed at a lower level to avoid clipping in the mix.
This offers an excellent chance of recovery IF you still have the unmixed Audacity Project.

Unfortunately, while it is theoretically possible to have digital audio above 0dB without clipping, provided that it is in 32 bit float format, Audacity 1.2.x always clips at 0dB.

Audacity 1.3.12 is usually able to handle waves that are above 0dB (provided that the format is 32 bit float), allowing the waveform to be "amplified" by a negative amount and brought back down to under 0dB, but this is not guaranteed as some effects and plug-ins will automatically clip at 0dB.

ClipFix can be quite effective if there is only very slight clipping. If the clipping is bad enough to hear (crunchy distortion on the loud notes) then ClipFix is unlikely to be able to make an effective repair.

wow thanks for the help guys! Just applied 'Effect > Amplify at -3dB' as per Koz's suggestion and that has made a massive difference. Much cleaner less distorted sound. Going to download ver 1.3.12 and see if I can tidy it up even more. Thanks again
