No audio playback after I've recorded

I am new to this and have spent many hours over the last three days trying to figure out my problem. Needless to say, I'm tired and very frustrated.
Here's the problem.
I have a cassette that needs to be converted to CD. I downloaded AUDACITY to my PC. I connected my tape player via the headphone jack and my input on the PC. I have get sound through the PC speakers when I push the record button. I see the green and red monitors and the blue wave will go up and down occasionally. (As the speaker's voice increases)
My problem is that when I go to play it back there is NO sound whatsoever. (I have the green bars that move back and forth though) I have tried to listen through just my computer and also burning a CD with no luck whatsoever.
Please can you help me? I've read and read the post and there aren't any listed that are like my problem. There are some that are close and I've checked the suggestions from them, but I still am having no luck in getting any playback.
When you answer, please list a detailed, step by step instructions since I am new to this and really don't know what I'm doing. I'm sure it is an easy problem to fix, I just don't know how.
Thanks so very much,
Valorie
