Somehow I lost the meter bar .

all the posts say go to view>preferences>float meter bar . In my version the "float meter bar" is greyed out. I do not have the choice to "dock" it.

I had the meter bar for months . I deleted the program and downloaded and re-installed and still no meter bar .
This bugs me that its gone and I can't seem to retrieve it .

I did download the ver 1.3 BETA and the meter bar is there and can be floated and docked - but I would just like to know what happened ??

If it means anything I did download the latest patches to WXP Pro SP3 .

You "reinstall" Audacity by trashing a preference file, not by installing fresh software.

(for Audacity 1.2.x it is highly recommended to use the "safe" method).

Having said that, my advice would be to ignore Audacity 1.2.6 and stick with Audacity 1.3.12 as the new version is vastly superior and the old 1.2 version is no longer supported.
