Audacity.exe encounters an error and aborts

I am trying to install Audacity on a XP Pro PC on a domain. I am the admin. It instlls but fails with Windows message that the program has encountered a problem and needs to close - send report to ms?
This is a copy of 1.2.6 that I just downloaded. I have installed and run this on non-domain machines succesfully. There is a code in the Error Repoer = 0xc0000005. The OS is XP Pro SP2. I saved the installer to the C drive and installed the appp in C:Program Files. C drive has 50+ GB of free space. I have tried loading this on two machines however they are the same hardware setup so I tried a third machine with older hardware. I have copied the installer from our server and I have downloaded it directly to the C drive. I am connected to the domain network via VPN and I use RDP to log onto the PC.
I was able to install and run the beta 1.3.5 but I'd rather have the users run the released version.
Any clues to make this work for us?

The first thing that comes to mind is that Audacity 1.2.x uses the Windows Registry, Audacity 1.3.x does not.
Until Audacity 1.4 comes out, I think that version 1.3.4 is probably your best bet - I find it rock solid (and it has a lot of improvements beyond 1.2.6).

1.3.5 is pretty close to what 1.4 will be - I have been running 1.3.5 since it was released and find it emminently stable.

I know this is late but I too had the issue of Audacity not even opening and getting the Windows error: "Audacity has encountered a problem and needs to close"...
I have used various versions of Audacity for YEARS and NEVER seen this error! I had used this copy on this computer for many many months then suddenly began seeing this error when I tried to start Audacity> I tried EVERYTHING: getting rid of all temp files, checking and reinstalling codecs, registry cleaning EVERYTHING I could think of and still no joy.. I had searched for answers but missed this specific thread about the new 1.4/1.3 beta not using the registry so I thought" what the hell" and even thought I usually wait for stable versions of almost all software I DL'ed the Beta 1.3...
WORKED perfect from the moment I installed it!
So at this point I do not care what the other problem was , I have wasted far too much time on it..
Thanks for the Beta!

Doug,
1.3.7 is now even closer to what the next stable release will be (likely to be called 2.0). A further beta version 1.3.8 should be released shortly, it fixes a few bugs that exist is 1.3.7. I have used only 1.3.7 since its release and have found it emminently stable for the work I do with Audacity.

I too am having a problem, but with an install of 1.3.8 Beta on an XP pro SP3 machine. I am the admin
Toward the end of the install a series of error messages appears telling me
"HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.AUP" Failed Code 5 (that is the first message)
and maybe five more messages like that. Ignore them and the application simply aborts.
Any clues on what's going on?

There appears to be a problem with the 1.3.8 release -the developers are aware.
