noise removal

I am using a USB turntable to convert records into music files.
Some of the records are in poor shape.
Is there a way to improve the quality of the recording? (Removing crackling and hissing noises)

I do a lot of LP transcriptions the tools I use are Audacity - in conjunction with Brian Davies excelllent ClickRepair (this s/w costs a little at $40 but is only a liitle shy of magic IMHO in the way it deals with your clicks and posp). See this sticky thread:
