Problem using Audacity

I have downloaded and installed Audacity 1.2.6, but when I click on the record button to record what is playing on my computer, nothing happens. (I am using Windows XP.) What am I missing? Any ideas?

It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.12
