Vinyl is too loud and distorted.
I'm trying to record my vinyl off my Pro-ject debut turntable with an otophon stylus through a Pro-ject Phono Box II USB pre amp connection thing. I'm running windows vista on a 6 month old PC. Neither the Turntable or the USB pre-amp have a gain or volume controls and when I open the sound in audacity to preview it, it is just really distorted as if the level is too high, where can I turn things down? or is there another problem I'm missing. I've tried a different USB lead just to make sure and my stylus is not a problem when litening through my amp.
Re: Vinyl is too loud and distorted.
I've just tried recording through sound recorder and found the same problem so I suppose the problem is that I've just got too loud a signal coming in from the source. But how can I turn it down since I have no control on either the turntable or the pre-amp? Perhaps this is one for the good people of project.

Any chance you can send the Project "thingy" back - you can buy a similar combined phono pre-amp with USB sound card from ART which does have a gain control - see: http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp ... =13&id=128
Not only is there a gain control you get an LED indicator light - green= no clippping, turns red when clipping occurs. This enables you you set a good strong signal without hardware clipping. Also importantly you get a grounding post to earth the TT to.
I use a very similar device from ART as my phono pre-amp, but fed to a separate USB soundcard (Edirol) and this works very well with Audacity.
