Audio Signal Peaks Out For No Reason

Post by Pendejo » Mon Oct 18, 2010 11:10 pm

I'm using Audacity 1.2.6 on Windows XP with an Ion TTUSB turntable to transfer to my vinyl LP's to my computer. It works fine, except that sometimes when I'm recording, the audio level peaks to extreme levels and it becomes very distorted. And this has nothing to do with the actual audio levels on whatever LP I happen to be recording. I'm not sure why it's doing this. It could also be a problem with the turntable. I'm not sure, so I'm trying here first. Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know what to do about it? Thanks!

Some (but not all) ION USB TTs have a gain control knob. It is usually fitted in a very unobvious and un-ergonomic place, underneath at the back next to where the cables exit. It is a little knurled knob.

If yours does not have one of these then you may be able to control the signal level via the Windows sound controls.

But if it's working right most of the time with only occsional mis-function -then it may be a poor USB connection.

You are plugging direct to a USB port on the PC and not using a hub - right?

Try a different USB port on the PC if you have one - or gently wiggle the USB plug in its socked - or unplug and re-plug.
