Audacity worked yesterday, but not today.

I am using Win XP Prof SP2. Yesterday, I opened Audacity, then file ->open, and opened several FLAC files (each took about 10 seconds to open). Then looked at the FFT spectrum. Everything worked great. Thanks.
Today, no. And I did a search here for "failed opening", but nothing on point. And I looked at the first two pages of topics, but nothing I could use.
When I do file->open and choose the FLAC file, Audacity starts to load the file, gets half-way done and freezes with the notice that 11 seconds remain. I did that three times with different FLAC files and got the same result.
So I deleted the entire Audacity folder and reinstalled 1.2.6. Same result.
When I opened Task Manager, Audacity is using 50% of my CPU capacity and getting nowhere.
Each time I open Audacity now, it tells me that there are temporary files and asks for permission to delete them. I delete them. There is probably some other broken file somewhere that I have to delete, but it is not in the Audacity program folder.
Where should I look and what should I delete? I would like to get back to what I had running yesterday with a clean install. This looks like a great application.
Thanks,
Mike
