Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

The only listings I have showing in both recording and playback devices are :

So where exactly are you stuck in the process?

And what is this "Audacity booklet" that you talk about?

I would recommend upgrading to 1.3 Audacity - the latest version is 1.3.12 and is probably the best Audacity yet. Don't be frightened off by the Beta labelling - 1.3 is now a pretty mature Beta and is in most cases much more stable than the officially "stable" 1.2 series (which is now ancient and no longer supported or upgraded). I run 1.3.12 as my production environment on both my XP machines (HE & PRO). You can get 1.3.12 from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/

With regard to your particualr problem with your USB TT, this set of tutorials from the 1.3/2.0 manual should help you: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... iscs_to_CD
And in particular this one: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... turntables

Hello,
Thanks for reply. The Fission usb turntable I purchased came with a cd which had Audacity 1.2.6. and the book which came with the turntable explains how to operate the turntable and how to install audacity from the cd. That is the booklet I was referring to. The booklet takes you through the stages and the wizard has enabled me to install the Audacity software. The booklet then gives instructions for configuring Audacity for Windows. It says to clock on the edit button and select preferences:
* click the audio I/O at the audacity preferences interface.
* Click the device and select microphone (USB Audio CODEC).
* Click the channels and select 2 (Stereo) * Click OK.

It is here that I have the problem as stated in my original query as the only listings I have in the audacity preferences interface recording and playback devices are:

1. Microsoft sound mapper.
2. NVIDIA (R) nForceTM audio.

USB Audio CODEC does not show up in the interface.

Do you have your turntable turned on and the USB connector plugged in to the PC before firing up Audacity? Failure to that is the commonest cause of a USB device not being recognized.

And what does it say in the Windows Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices on the Audio tab - does Windows see the USB device?

BTW we often find that hardware manufacturers of USB TTs have out of date or just plain wrong instructions on the use of Audacity in their documentation. That's why I gave you the links to the tutorials in our manual.
