must record with playback sound but cannot

Hello ...my name is adam burton and i just recently downloaded audacity 1.2.6 and i do like the program so far but i am having difficulty in recording a new track over an old one while the old one plays back.....i have my inport recording device via USB and the headphone output jack on my computer is hooked up to my mixer.....my hp pavillion entertainment pc recognizes the hardware and i can see the levels coming from my instrument....i have the one track already recorded...i just want to put another guitar in the project and i can do that....but i have no actual sound coming from my laptop of my old rif while i try to record my new one.....its like im trying to record in the dark and nothing will be in time together as a result...its like the inport overrides the headphone output connection on my computer and gives nothing...like i said i do have audio data being recognized and read but there is no actual sound coming out from my laptop....if you could please email me back with anything that would be a great help...i JUST WANNA ROCK....YOU FEEL ME DOGGS????

Go to Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O - and check the box that says "Play other tracks while recording new one"
