deleting old files

This probably is a dumb question, but ... how do I get rid of old aup files to free up space on my hard drive? I would delete them if I could find them; the problem is I can't find them. Where are they normally stored?

If you have saved a project (File > Save Project), then each .aup project file and its corresponding _data folder don't have a set location, but go to the destination folder you chose when saving. You can find the last folder you saved to by just generating a tone or importing a file, and seeing the directory Audacity offers to save to. Note that it is the _data folder that takes the space, not the .aup file, which is only a text file.
If you have not saved a project, but only exported a file like an MP3, then there is only temporary data. This should be deleted when you exit Audacity, but if you ever want to check that the Audacity temp. folder is empty, its location is given on the Directories tab of Preferences (for Windows, at the bottom of the Edit Menu).
