I have recently purchased a Soundlab USB turntable to record my LP collection onto my computer. The compuer is running on the Millenium version of windows but from the literature that shouldn't be a problem. After a bit of a struggle I installed Audacity 1.2.6 and got it to work but the recorded sound suggests the stylus is slipping over the groves of the record. My first though was that the counter weight on the stylus was in the wrong place allowing the needle to skid over the record but when I played the same record without adjustment through a hi-fi system, the sound was perfect. I assume therefore, there must be a problem with the software. Could anyone offer a solution to this problem or should I send the whole package back and try something else.

A combination of Audacity drivers, USB Audio Services, and the operating system sometimes results in unstable recordings from USB turntables. Secret Aural Teachings and Home Remedies suggest an upgrade to Audacity 1.3, putting a wall-powered USB hub in the middle, and there was some talk about sacrificing small furry animals by moonlight.
The only sure way to eliminate the problem is stop using the USB services. If your turntable has an analog output (two RCAs) and your computer has a Line-In, then connect them, reassign the audio pathways inside Windows and go to town. This works 100% of the time. If you have a Windows laptop, this can kill you because they typically have Mic-In and not Line-In. The turntable signal will be some 1000 times too loud for a Mic-In.
