reboot on starting Autacdity 1.2.6

I recently suffered a disk crash - total loss.
So I have downloaded Audacity 1.2.6 and installed it. (Not sure it if the version I used to use).
When I come to run it, it first asks me for the language. I select English.
When I press OK, it immediately reboots my machine.
O/S is Win2K with all updates, (save one which won't install). Plenty of RAM, disk space etc.
Ideas anyone?
Regards
Ian

There are very very few Win2k users that come to this forum (you are only the second one that I've seen).
Try Audacity 1.3.4 and see if that is any better.

I got round to trying 1.3 Beta today.
Same result. Instant reboot!
And it used to work fine. Sigh!

I believe that Audacity should work with Win2k and as I do not have Win2k I'm scratching around in the dark for a solution. Start with a clean boot of Win2k, then close down all non-essential applications and processes. Then try opening Audacity and see if that is any better (it's possible that some other program or process is interfering with Audacity).

I have several licenses of Win2K in active service. (I'm the one! That's what, three?) I would need to go home and try it, so this is going to take longer than the usual snappy comeback to a tech question.
No, that's not normal.
Fill in the holes for us. Your system disk (C:>) went into the mud? Are you sure? No boot and periodic ticking sound?
So you put a new hard drive into the machine and sat down with a good strong pot of coffee to put your world back together from the Install CDs? The option, of course, is that you made some sort of image or back and reinstalled that. I use DriveImage and I can put a Windows machine back together in about a half-hour.
I'm going for info on how you got your current machine.

One of my production PCs here at work, one other machine in the building and one of the other engineers are all running Win2K and we all have Audacity installed and running. This local version is 1.2.6. so I think it's the latest one for this platform.
So that takes care of the question of working at all.
Are you trying to install 1.2.6? It would be good to know that because at least one of the earlier versions of Audacity has memory management issues.
You could be having other problems with your machine and just don't know it yet. I have found the Microsoft Memory Diagnostic to be very helpful
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Start it running before you go to bed. Any normal machine should easily make it through the night. My machines go 24-hours before I put them in service.

I suspect it might be the exact mix of windows I have, or a registry entry.
After the crash, I installed the disk when it came, and installed win2K on it from the issue disks.
Then updated to SP4 and the latest fixes from MS.
Then I switched the swap file to D: and restored the backup over the top of the installed windows. I expected a few complaints, but I got remarkably few failures.
At which point I discovered that the backup software did not include any .exe, .dll, .com or .zip files.
I had my data, and the backup of my registry, but no programs and I was missing all install files. I cannot tell you if I restored the registry on not. It was on the original plan that I had to abandon because of missing files in the backup.
So I have started on the long, tedious process of downloading and reinstalling the programs, which is when I discovered the problem with Audacity rebooting as it is loading.
The only other hint of a problem is that one of the security updates will not install.

FIXED - see below!!
Wow. I had exactly the same symptoms - except using Audacity 1.2.3-beta. Audacity simply rebooted my W2k machine as I opened it. - Ever since I loaded and used the Lame mp3 encoder for the first time.
And in safe mode it did not.
Did not want to investigate the sound card drivers usually don't like to mess with them as they as so unpredictable - and all working fine otherwise!
Is there a way to remove the MP3 exporter? (Do I simply delete the files - or do I need to de register the lame_enc.dll (Folder name is libmp3lame-3.97)
FIXED!
I have copied the newer version of lame_enc.dll 3.98 over 3.97 and it no longer reboots me! (Haven't yet opened a file however).
I had thought the problem was opening 3 to 4 GB audio files... until I found this thread.
Some details:
Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP4 all updates
AMD Athlon XP 2600
785MB Ram
Audio card:
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (I think this is the onboard)
Also have a Pinnacle WDM PCTV audio and TV capture card
