I have tried reinstalling it but no help. have run spyware and virus programs and cleaned up anything that was found but problem continues. This never used to be a problem with this machine, it's been a while since I have used it . any7 Ideas?

Sudden Onset Computer Insanity can be caused by your hard drive filling up or becoming fragmented -- both easy to fix.
From Fuzzy Memory: Start > Computer > C: > Properties > Tools.
Inspect your C: drive. Do an error check and then defragment it. If you haven't done it in a while -- or ever, it might take some serious time. Audacity will not work into a full hard drive or a highly fragmented one. Report the numbers when you get in there. Capacity and remaining. "Enough" and "It's fine" are not numbers.
Then download and start using Audacity 1.3.

Unless you do the disk thing first, the new download may only make it all worse.
