I bought a license for Total Recorder when I got tired of messing around with the Windows Sound Panels--usually unsuccessfully.

There may be other Windows tools that will allow you to do that, but it's intentionally made difficult because of copyright issues.

Depending on your versions of Windows, you may be able to jigger the Sound Panels around to work. This is a lot less successful in Vista.

We can assume this is a rental video, right?

Your VCR/PVR/DVD recorder - most of these have a pair of RCA outputs on the back (For connection to an amp or home cinema etc.) Connect these RCA outputs to your soundcourd. If you are using an on-board souncdard you will likely need stereo RCA to 3.5mm TRS mini-jack. If you have an external soundcard you will likely need RCA to RCA connection.

Despite Koz' dire warnings re doing this on Windows - this approach works well for me (Windows XP-HE-SP2)
