Input volume too high - clipping

Hi

I've had a look and there was a post on the forum for the later version of Audacity about recording levels but I couldn't see on in the 1.2.x forum. Hope this is okay.

I've got Audacity 1.2.4 that came with an ION USB turntable iT TUSB05. I'm running windows XP.

I've got a few tracks that are clipping when I record them and can't seem to lover the input volume. On the Audacity input control (with the mic symbol) the slider is right down to the minimum. I don't actually remember moving the slider to the minimum so I'm wondering if that's a preset of there is some sort of automatic adjustment. Anyway, the recording is clipping quite a lot and I'd like to reduce the input level.

I've looked at some other advice and I'm told to turn down the preamp but the turntable doesn't seem to have one. I don't remember installing any software, drivers and such, other than Audacity. Is there any way of turning down the input signal in Windows. I've looked at the advanced volume controls but nothing there helps.

Any ideas?

Upgrade to Audacity 1.2.6 (the current 1.2 version):

Look under the turntable chassis for any gain knob there might be.

To turn the input level down in Windows, Start > (Settings) > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio devices. Click the "Audio" tab, then in the "Sound recording" panel choose the USB codec, and click the "Volume" button.
