Increase Levels??

Hello.

For some reason, I am having trouble with Audacity's levels when trying to make vinyl recordings via a simple USB turntable (the turntable has no preamps or anything). Even with the input volume maxed, the actual recording levels are maybe at maybe 1/8 where a typical recording should be around 1/2.

What really confuses me is I haven't had this problem before. I have made adequate recordings with the exact same setup - same turntable, computer, etc), with satisfactory results. I didn't use the turntable for awhile, and when I went bought some new records, the levels are just atrociously low.

Any ideas other than the the obvious input volume would be appreciated.

thanks.

Some USB turntables have a volume control hidden on the bottom (underneath the turntable), so check there if you've not already done so.

Which version of Audacity and which Windows are you using?
(For the Audacity version, look in "Help menu > About Audacity")

I am having the same issue - although I've been successful in the past with the same recording configuration. I have updated the software, restarted the system per Audacity instructions, and I have essentially "cranked" up all level input controls - as well as turntable levels (though using the 1/8" auxiliary input for cassette deck - increasing its output level to nearly maximum.

The meters (also listening w/play-through monitors checked) are showing maximum levels of -12.

I have not experienced this before today - and I've used this software on and off for over 3 years...

Using Windows Vista (Home Premium / SP2) & ION (model TTUSB) USB turntable.

Thanks,

Jeff
