Hi,
I have a friend who just installed Audacity, but instead of having "Stereo Mix, Mono Mix, Line-in, Microphone, etc" in the drop-down menu, she has "Line Volume" and "Mic Volume" instead. She owns a Toshiba laptop with XP system. The version isn't the cause, so we're not sure why. Please advice. Thanks.
"Line/Mic Volume"?

Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.
The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Re: "Line/Mic Volume"?
What you get in the input options is entirely dependent on the particular soundcard that you have in your PC and its associated driver software - and can thus vary greatly from PC to PC.

Re: "Line/Mic Volume"?
So say if she wants the option of "Stereo Mix," does that mean she needs to change the soundcard?

Re: "Line/Mic Volume"?
Basically yes - but rather than swap an on-board soundcard I woul recommend using an external USB or Firewire soundcard.
I use an Edirol UA-1EX and stevethefiddle uses the Behringer UCA202 - both seem to work well with Audacity. The Edirol is moere expensive but has more features/functionality.
As a first step though it may be worth searching t'interweb to see if there is updated driver software available for the soundcard - this my help, but is not guaranteed to do so.
