Audacity stops recording after a short time

I have successfully recorded 3 full CDs from my phono using Audacity. After starting to transfer another LP to my computer, the input "flatlined" (no signal--even noise). I assumed that perhaps my input cables or plugs were at fault. I changed them. It is not the input because my computer speakers continue to operate while playing the LP. I have noted that if I play with the "input" and change from "line in" to something else and then back to line in sometimes I will get a signal back. However, the signal will flatline again after 30 seconds to 5 minutes. I have checked my computer defaults--input volume etc. as well. Any suggestions?
Windows XP; HP 720 desktop; Audacity 1.2.6; SoundMaxDigital Audio; Input volume .2

This seems to happen to many folks - what I would try is installing the latest version of the Beta Audacity 1.3.4 and see if that works better. It's likely to be down to your souncard and its associated driver software.

You can download it from here: http://audacityteam.org/. Note that you can have 1.2 and 1.3 loaded on the same PC - just don't try to run them both at once.

The other thing I would try is to search t'interweb to see if there are updated drivers available for your soundcard - and if there is install the later version.

Thanks, I will give it a try. It will take a while as this computer is no longer hooked to the web.

The other thing to try is to stop all other background processes wjile Audacity is working - as you are not on t'interweb that will not create interrups - and you can temporarily disable virus checking (and if your virus checker can be set to ignore certain filetypes, try setting it to ignore/trust .au and .aup files).

waxcylinder: That is a good idea as well. Since I plan on only using this computer until I have transferred all my LP's I will delete the Virus Protection entirely and get rid of most items on the hard drive. I have a new computer and will donate this old one to our school.

I'd also defrag the hard drive occasionally too.
