Back in the good ol' days when we had vinyl disks called records.....
OK, so we have 33 1/3 rpm for LP's, 45 rpm for singles, and 78 rpm for 78's
So a "45" should be played at 45 Rotations Per Minute.
A "78" should be played at 78 Rotations Per Minute (nearly twice as fast)
If we play a "78" record at 45 rpm, it will sound very slow and people will sound like mud monsters.
If you have a "78" record but you only have a record player that plays LP's and "45's" you will be stuck with a record that plays either "slow" (45 rpm) or "very slow"(33 1/3 rpm).
This is where Audacity comes to the rescue:
Record the slow ("78 record played at 45 rpm) record into Audacity
Ctrl + A (select all)
"Effects > Change Speed" - and select the speeds "from 45 to 78"
The track will now be "speed-ed up to 78 rpm"
Now play the track back and it will no longer sound slow, but will be quicker, and the pitch will go up and it will sound like a 78 record played at the correct speed.
Of course, if we started with a recording that was not slowed down, then we will have still sped it up and it will sound like chipmunks.
