Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity Installation unwanted changes.

Post by w3a537 » Fri Sep 17, 2010 4:44 am

I downloaded AUDACITY WINDOWS from SOURCEFORGE and installed it.

The installer made unwanted changes to my system such as my IE home page
even though I unchecked repeat unchecked these options telling it NOT to
make these changes.

Again it made these changes anyway.

People should be aware of these charistics(sp).

Is there a clean AUDACITY ONLY installer anywhere that I could download?

These are the current releases.

I would be using Audacity 1.3.12, not Audacity 1.2 1.2 is seriously old and no longer managed or improved. It can have serious problems with newer computers.

When was the last time you did a comprehensive system virus scan? I don't mean the wimpy one that runs in the background, I mean the serious one that takes control of your machine for an hour.

Alternately, Microsoft makes a virus scanner you can download hot and run without a formal virus scan installer package.

Double check that it really is "Audacity" that you are trying to install. You may have inadvertently clicked on an advertising link on Sourceforge and downloaded the wrong program. Audacity does not change the IE home page.

The current version of Audacity 1.3.12 for Windows can be downloaded from a direct link on this page: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
The file that you want is:

1. Well, I use Norton 360.
2. And, I don't really beleive there is an AUDACITY specific virus that did this.
3. Yes, it's audacity, it's still on my machine but it's the older one.
4. And, the installer asked to install ASK. I said no. But ASK is there. about 3 minutes after I installed AUDACITY.
5. And, I got the installer from SORCEFORGE.

Where did ASK send you when it changed your IE? Did you save the address or have any other information?

There is a downloadable ASK toolbar and an ASK Mobile. I think this is an extension of the original Ask Jeeves Search Engine. It may not be a virus. It may be a particularly aggressive ad campaign.

But whatever it is, it is not part of Audacity. Audacity has never included any adware - the source code for Audacity is freely available for anyone to check: http://code.google.com/p/audacity/downl ... nloadCount

I didn't save the URL, I just set it back to GOOGLE.
Then I ZAPPED ASK.
The URL was another search engine that said it was powered by GOOGLE.
It showed a picture of some musical instrument but I don't remember which.
The installer is gone because I already emptied my recycle bin.
I downloaded the installer again and it did not this time suggest
anything about loading ASK.

All is ok now.

Google itself has been doing some serious background stuff. I was reading a long feature article with simple pictures but no animations or movies. Every so often, my computer would go into the Spinning Beachball of Death when it couldn't keep up with "something." The note at the bottom of the browser informed me that something Google something something was connecting. Scrolling through the article froze. This is all happening on a relatively powerful Mac.

The next opportunity I turned off JavaScript and the problem largely went away. The presentation went back to normal.

I turn off JavaScript a lot.
