create short pure tone files

hi, i am a novice. need to create a pure tone file (400 hz, lasts 1000 ms.) for experiment. please help.

Set Audacity preferences for the audio standard you want (48000, 16 bit). Generate > tone > [Sine, 400, 0.5 amplitude (-6dB), 1 sec.]
OK.
Audacity does not easily generate stereo tones.

Missed a step. Export As WAV... to get the output mono file. Wave has far less distortion than MP3.

You just need to create a stereo track first.
