Monitoring while recording new track with mic

Hello,

I record through a Shure SM58 mic with a X2U USB connector. The file will not playback audibly, unless the USB is unplugged. My OS is Windows Vista.

I would like to be able to record a new vocal track over my existing guitar track, while monitoring through headphones, but all I get is silence when the USB is plugged in. I, of course, have "play other tracks..." checked while doing this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Doug

I'd suggest upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12, then in "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" set the playback device to your sound card.

Well, that was embarrassingly easy. There was no need to upgrade, and all it took was the change to playback devices, under "preferences."

Thanks for the advice.

I'm glad you've got it working, though I'd still highly recommend upgrading - if you just want to try it but keep the 1.2.6 version than you can have both versions installed at the same time. The limitations are that Audacity 1.2.6 cannot open projects that are save by Audacity 1.3.12. Also, you cannot run them both simultaneously.

Audacity 1.3.12 has quite a few really useful new features and is usually more stable than the old 1.2.6 version. 1.2.6 is really old now, is no longer maintained, and has some known bugs that will not be fixed.
