Audacity ver. 1.2.6
I downloaded a background music track into a My Music file and opened Audacity. Went to Project, then Import Audio. The file showed up on the list, but when I selected it and asked it to Open, I got a Audacity window that said: "audacity.exc has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then the choice of whether to send the error report to Microsoft.

Can anyone figure out what could be the problem here?

Try upgrading to the 1.3.12 version and then install FFMpeg.

Got it going. The solution was to put the MP3 on my desktop and DRAG it to Audacity. Don't have a clue as to why it won't import any other way, but I'm not going to question it...

You should. Audacity 1.2 is seriously old and unimproved and can cause stability problems in newer computers. You can view your odd problem as just the first chapter, not "I cured the problem forever."
