Pardon....I cant hear you!!

I recently downloaded the audacity software onto my new PC which runs on Windows Vista, The audacity seems to be working fine. The problem is that I now have no sound from my PC when not using Audacity.....i.e. my PC is silent!!!! I suspect that it is just a setting that needs tweeking has anyone any ideas what i might try??
