Stops immediately when recording

I have been using audacity the past several days with the current stable version with no problems. All of a sudden, when I hit the record button the red track marker moves only slightly and blinks with no recording going on. No system changes have taken place durning this time. I tried removing and reloading to no avail. I couldn't find anything in the documentation that describes this so I'm hoping someone has the answer.
