Tracks exported as MP3's play like skipping CD's

Hi
I am still a beginner with Audacity, so bear with me! I have successfully recorded an audio track and when I export it as an MP3 and play it back using whatever playback software it sounds as if the song is skipping/fast forwarding for a few seconds. Basically it will play fine then skip and then be OK. Some songs are unaffected but the majority are. I have tried shutting down all other applications(including Internet) before exporting but this does not seem to help. My operating system is Windows XP . Any help would be appreciated as I am really starting to become annoyed, and the process of manually removing the trouble spots using silence insertions/cutting process is time consuming and not worth the effort.
thanks
