Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Microsoft PCM WAV files should import perfectly, but WMA is not supported so you would need to use a standalone converter such as SUPER to convert WMA files to WAV.

On Windows, I would use SUPER, but there are several other free format converters.

Does it play in anything? Windows Media Player? WinAmp? Foobar2000?

If you right click on the file, select "Properties", go to the "Summary" tab and select "Advanced", what does it say? (please copy and post everything that it says, or post a screen shot).

This track plays in Windows Media Player, where I have imported it into Audacity. It also plays in Super. When I right click on the file in Audacity nothing happens. When I right click on the file in Windows Media Player I do not get the Summary and Advanced options.

Let's try to narrow this down a bit carlyon - Does Audacity work OK on your computer? Can you play anything in Audacity?

Yes, following my original enquiry about the play button, I was given a test piece to play, and it worked fine. I couldn't right click on it , though.
