Audacity 1.2 may crash when you press Stop after recording. Please use Audacity 1.3.12:
http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows
Even if the sound device on your Windows 7 machine has a "what u hear" or "stereo mix" device, it will not be visible and enabled by default.
Please read the documentation on the Wiki:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... _Issues#cp
Read the green panel there "HELP WITH RECORDING COMPUTER PLAYBACK OR STREAMING AUDIO", then scroll down to the instructions for going to "Sound" in the Windows Control Panel:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp
You will need to follow those instructions to show the disabled and disconnected devices, then to enable any input there may be for recording computer playback.

Most Windows XP systems provided What-U-Hear as a normal thing and everybody could make it work. Windows Vista many times hid What-U-Hear and you had to go looking for it -- but you could still do it.
Many Windows-7 systems are missing What-U-Hear, and the only way to record YouTube sound is with one of the software packages written to do it like Total Recorder.
Is Total Recorder compatible with Windows 7 32/64-bit?
Yes. Total Recorder 7.1 and higher are fully compatible with Windows 7.

Please read the information you have already been given, that is the green panel ""HELP WITH RECORDING COMPUTER PLAYBACK OR STREAMING AUDIO" here:
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... _Issues#cp
If you read that, there are several possibilities including trying the Realtek Control Panel if you have a Realtek device, connecting the line-out to line-in, or using
Freecorder to record streaming audio (it operates from your web browser). The 4.0 version of Freecorder only records as low bit rate MP3, which means the files are small but not of best quality. Total Recorder mentioned by Koz records to WAV (larger files but no loss of quality in the file itself) but is not free.
If you want to record YouTube or other popular sites, just download the video files directly to your computer using KeepVid or similar:
http://keepvid.com/
which is completely lossless (you get the video/audio in as good or bad quality as it already is).

I have a Windows 7 Asus laptop with a Realtek HD audio device ( manufacturer - microsoft). I have just managed to get audacity to record, so I thought I would share all the settings because it took some playing around - for those with a similar system.
(1) • Ctrl panel
o Hardware and sound
Manage audio devices
• Playback tab
o Right click on any option and check show disabled devices
make sure speakers are enabled and Realtek digital output is disabled
o click on Speakers – green tick –
Properties
Use this device enabled
Under advanced
Check allow application to take exclusive control of this device and give exclusive mode applications priority
o
Recording TAB
• disable microphone
• right click on microphone and check show disabled and disconnected devices
• this shows STEREO MIX
o properties
dropdown menu select use this device
o LISTEN TAB – ENSURE LISTEN TO THIS DEVICE IS UNCHECKED- or results in horrible echos and feedback
o Under Playback through this device
select Speakers ( realtek high def audio)
o Levels – mid levels
o Enhancements – DC offset cancellation was checked
o Advanced tab
allow apps to take excl control checked give exclusive ctrl mode apps priority
ALSO go to audacity program and select
(2) Audacity – 1.3.12 beta Unicode - the earlier version crashed
View
• Toolbars
o Device toolbar - check to see
Input – windows direct sound: speakers ( Realtek High Def audio)
Mic symbol - windows direct sound Stereo mix
ALSO go to the orange speaker Icon in the system tray - Realtek manager
(3) Realtek manager - should now have a stero mix tab
• Stero mix
o Advanced settings
Check tie up same type of input jacks
Monitor if it works by playing music or sounds and clicking on the microphone symbol L/R bars in audacity. This works on my system, although the volumes attained are not as much as on my old Windows XP
I hope this helps somebody - because I appreciate the help I got from this forum
