Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Cannot record right channel -Rec level at maximum

Post by malc77 » Thu Sep 02, 2010 3:28 pm

Hi- Audacity 1.2.6 used to record fine for me. Unfortunately, now the Right channel Input level goes to maximum even with no sound being played - and the blue signal trace line goes immediately to 1.0 (not 0.0). This is on 'Stereo Mix' 'Mono' and 'Line In' inputs only (not Mic /CD etc) .The Left channel is still all fine and records and plays back OK as usual. But Playing back the Right channel has no sound.
.....I did recently try and record some stuff directly from an amplifier and wonder if I have damaged my on board sound card (Asus A7N8X-X) with the input signal levels being too high......Any help most gratefully received thanks.

Plug a cable into the Line-In connection (Blue?) but don't plug it into anything else. Go into Windows Sound Panels and select Line-In to record from. Make sure Audacity Preferences is also set for Line-In and make a recording. Do you still get the right channel running at maximum volume?

I don't know of any way to get a data pathway to do that, so the only thing left is a damaged connector or damage on the motherboard. Try cleaning the plug with glass cleaner, and plug it back in and out several times. Still broken?

I have plugged cables/plugs into Line -In and microphone in every combination. The problem remains. If I select (in Audacity) Aux, Video,CD Audio, Microphone or SPIF all appears OK with the level meters (left and Right) but if I select Stereo Mix the right channel meter goes fully over to maximum and the blue trace line goes to +1.0 . ......If I select Line In the blue trace line goes down this time to -1.0 and the level meter for both channels remains at zero. (If I select Mono Mix both left and right level meters go fully over to maximum and both blue trace lines go to +1.0.
Phew- can anyone help please?
