In the previous version that I used, there was a way to convert stereo to mono. When I replaced my computer, I updated to ver 1.2.6. So far, I haven't been able to find that command. I've tried Quick Mix, but see from HELP that if the source is stereo, it results in stereo. I don't see a way to delete one channel either, since with identical channels, that would work.

One of my major uses of Audacity, and what I currently need it for, is to convert downloaded public domain audio books from MP3 to WAV for recording as audio CDs to allow them to be played on a CD player in my vehicle. I have no need for stereo since the two tracks are identical, and converting to mono as my first step is helpful in reducing processing time.

How do I convert from stereo to mono in ver 1.2.6?

There is a process to do this with multiple tools, but you're far better off using the "Stereo Track To Mono" tool in Audacity 1.3.12.

Many newer computers no longer fully support Audacity 1.2.

Excellent! I held off using 1.3.12 because it is shown as beta, but will DL and install it.

I did play around a bit since I posted and found that I can add an audio track, copy the stereo and paste into the new audio, and that seems to do the trick. But, the single tool in 1.3.12 should be faster.

It's harder than you think. You not only have to split up the stereo show into two independent pieces, but you also have to divide each volume by half so they don't add and create overload damage.

Far better in Audacity 1.3.12.

Tracks > Stereo Track to Mono.
