Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Hi WC

You've changed!!

Anyway, thanks very much for the helpful comments. I will try these on my computer at home when I have more time at the weekend.

I will download the latest version as suggested and as my last resort I'm going to take my laptop into work and see if I can plead with the IT guys that they will help. They are very busy and sometimes a bit off when asked to help with personal stuff so that's why I haven't done it before. It that fails, I will go back to the Daily Mail and suggest it may be a faulty device.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it pans out.

Yes, do that first - it will make setting everything up correctly a lot easier.

So, you have the jack plug of the "music grabber" plugged into the headphone socket of your stereo, and the USB plug of the "music grabber" into your laptop?

Does your stereo have any "phono plug" outputs? (possibly labelled "Line Out" or "Aux Out" or "Pre Out" or "Tape Out")
We'll stick with the "headphone out" for now (you can easily check that a signal is coming out of the headphone socket by plugging in your headphones), but if we get this working then it may give better results from a "Line Out" if your stereo has one.

When you have installed Audacity 1.3.12 - ensure that you have the music grabber USB plugged into the computer before you start Audacity.
Start Audacity and go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Devices" and set the "Recording" device to the USB option, and the "Playback" device to your normal sound card.

Hi Steve and WC

Success of a sort. I did download the latest version of Audacity, but I think the real problem was the volume on my stereo which if turned up to virtually the maxium, it will record. I tried recording from my Ipod which was fine so I then thought it was the headphones socket in my stereo which was at fault, but when I turned the volume up eventually I could see the blue line doing what Steve said it should do.

Thanks very much guys. Now have a project for the winter months.
