Cleaning up sound issues caused by stuttering mike

Hi, is there any way to clean up certain sound problems as specified below?

Generally, most of the audio file has decent quality (recorded from a handphone : nokia 5320) however, there was a short period of time when part of the audio equipment(probably amplifier) used by the speaker started to break up or even distort the speaker's voice, for a short while.

I'm unsure how to phrase this but how do I get the blue parts of the graph to fill out?

Given that this is about what it's supposed to look like all the time...

Everything about that presentation is wrong. Before and after are too high and the part in the middle is the right level, but missing parts of the actual performance.

Do you have a cable connecting your cellphone to the Mic-In of your Windows Laptop? How are you doing the actual recording -- the actual physical voice capture? And it doesn't read like the performer is just talking to you on the phone. Is this a conference call like the US Stock Exchange does?

Well as I've said before, it is a recording from a handphone and was actually taken during a recent talk. I'm actually using Audacity to clean up the audio file. :)

Thanks for the help. =P

<<<speaker started to break up or even distort the speaker's voice>>>

If all that happened was the volume went up and down or other graceful damage like that, then we'd be able to help you. Anything we do with clippers or compressors is just going to make the damage louder to fill up the holes in blue.

You could select just the damaged portion and apply Effect > Leveler on Heaviest, or maybe Effect > Compress Dynamics followed by Effect > Amplify to make the overall level come out to match. Compress Dynamics is Chris's Compressor which has to be installed as a separate tool.

In any exercise like this, you're far better off in Audacity 1.3.12 than Audacity 1.2.

Audacity 1.2 is seriously old with very simple tools and a small toolbox.

Is there any way you can post some of the damage so we can listen?
