Trouble importing sound

Post by Isle » Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:35 pm

Hello, I've successfully installed the program and have followed the instructions for use as indicated at http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Trans ... uter_or_CD but still cannot transfer any tapes. I am transferring from a portable cassette player to my line in jack using a 1/8 inch male-male stereo audio cable. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Running through the process again, it looks like I'm having mixer toolbar issues. The tutorial I mentioned above said that since I'm running XP, I should be able to select "line-in" from the mixer toolbar input selector, but it's greyed out. I looked at the "Mixer Toolbar Issues" tutorial and checked to make sure everything was set up correctly (which I think it is), but still haven't solved the problem.

In Audacity 1.3, the input selector doesn't appear.

In Audacity 1.3.12
Edit menu > Preferences > Devices

What options are available and what options have you got selected?

Have you read the section for XP on this page about how to select the recording input from the Windows Control Panel?
http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... trol_Panel
(You need to select the input that you have plugged the cassette player into - probably "Line" or "Mic")

Options for Interface are MME and Windows Direct Sound. Playback options are Microsoft Sound Mapper, Modem #0 Line Input, and SoundMAX digital audio. I've selected SoundMAX as default. For recording I have the same options available as input, plus USB EMP Audio Device, which I use whenever transferring video using my video capture cable. USB is default for recording input since I use my video capture cable all the time, but before using Audacity, I switch to SoundMAX for input in the menu and using the volume control panel in Windows.

and yeah, I read that tutorial as well, I have Line selected for recording when using the SoundMAX.

(edit) Okay, got mixer toolbar input selector to appear by selecting Windows Direct Sound from the interface dropdown box. Unmuted line in option under volume control, selected line in on the Audacity mixer toolbar input selector, connected everything and tried again but still nothing when I push record on Audacity.

Fixed it!

Had to switch from MME to Windows DirectSound in Edit->Preferences->Interface, and then select SoundMAX Digital Audio for Playback and Recording.

Thanks for the tip(s)!
