Playhead seems to be stuck

I've used Audacity successfully in the past on this same computer, yet when I tried this morning a strange thing happened.
First, I imported a song as an .mp3 and tried to play it. The playhead wouldn't move. Then, I imported the song as a .WAV, again the playhead just sat there. In both cases I could see the waveform on the track just the way I'm supposed to.
I then tried recording my voice. I could see my levels and the waveform. The recording worked fine. But, once again, when I tried to play back, the playhead wouldn't move and, needless to say, there was no sound.
