By definition, it may not be possible.

But I want to record my tracks at a high volume, but I don't want my speakers to be turned up high as I'm recording as Im doing this late at night.

Im recording from an internet radio station playing through my speakers. as far as i am aware it records at the same volume that you are listening to. how can i change this?

Thanks,

Zero Emissions

Do you have a volume control on your speakers?
If not, use headphones.

well the speakers I am referring to are built into my laptop so i control them via the laptop.

but when you turn the speakers down, the blue bars Audacity shows as its recording get lower. the same happens when i insert headphones.

Or wait a minute, does the blue lines that are shown only refer to the volume of what is playing and not what is recorded?

Plugging in headphones should make no difference to the recorded waveform, though turning down the playback volume will reduce the level of the recording when you are recording "Stereo Mix".

Which version of Windows are you using?
