I`m using 1-2-6 with Vista. More often than not, when I hit the stop button to stop the recording, everything greys out and message - "Audacity.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the prog to stop working correctly..." appears. Very frustrating when I`ve been recording for a couple of hours then lose it all!! I can`t be absolutely certain about this, but it only seems to have been happening since I`ve been using Vista. I don`t remember the problem occuring with XP. All suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

The recommended version of Audacity for Vista (and Windows 7) is Audacity 1.3.12. (Vista had not been invented when the 1.2.x version was written).
You can download Audacity 1.3.12 from here:

P.S. Do you happen to know if I can safely remove the earlier version (1-2-6) from my PC? I wondered if there may be some shared files etc. involved.

Audacity 1.2.6 can be deleted.

Back again, I`m afraid. With version 1-3-12, I need the latest version of LAME for MP3 conversion. This is only available as a source code (?) from Sourceforge. I downloaded and tried to open with Audacity, but it (Aud) will not load as a recommended program for opening Lame. Help again, please!

When I try to play back a newly recorded Audacity track, I`ve just started getting "Error when opening sound device. Check output device settings and the project sampling rate" Being only an enthusiastic amateur, what do I do to overcome this one? Many thanks.

Believe it or not, you need to check you sound device setting
Or to put that into English -
What are you recording with? (microphone plugged into the sound card?)
What do you have Windows set to use as the recording input? (the microphone socket of your sound card?)
What do you have Audacity set to use as the recording input? (the computer sound card microphone input?)
All three need to be the same.
The sample rates should also be set the same.
