Too Much Bass In Recording

Hey Everyone - So I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and Audacity 1.2.6.
I'm recording songs off my computer by setting audacity to record the "Stereo Mix" which when I click on properties - levels is set to 100 and balanced evenly. In the windows volume mixer, everything is set to 50. Now under these circumstances songs record very low, though they are still quite "bassy". I usually then amplify the tracks in audacity by about 13 db. This makes the songs loud enough, but then the bassyness becomes even more of an issue.
The output and input volume in audacity are both maxed. It's strange to me that I'm having the problem of too much bass, and that the tracks record at such a low volume in audacity.
Hopefully I haven't left out any critical info. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks in advance.
