file imports at wrong speed!

hi, i have been using audacity for a few years now, albeit only for fairly basic tasks - something has just happened which i've never seen before and cannot figure out at all! i want to split a particular sound file into two parts with an indexation (have done this innunerable times before). the file plays ok in media player, the information (in properties) appears regular etc - it's an mp3 file, fixed bitrate, should be very easy BUT when i import it, it emerges into audacity at twice the length it ought to be. when i played the file to check why, it plays at half speed -
i have tried the two other files from the same source for comparison, and they come out absolutely fine. i have now imported the "problem" file three times to see if it will fix itself - same each time. as i say i have NEVER encountered this before and can't understand what could possibly be happening, or why THIS particular file triggers THAT problem... as a matter of fact, i have frequently used audacity in the past to "fix" some files (e.g. mp3s ripped at variable bitrate) which itunes (eg) can't read accurately - putting these through audacity has always solved the problem.
has anyone ever seen this, or does anyone have any idea what's going on? i can't get my poor head round it
