Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Disc space?? NEED INFO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by frenchy » Wed Mar 26, 2008 6:32 pm

I notice when I record my lp's there is a space that shows DISC SPACE that remains. I am not sure what this means. Is that disc space on my computer ? Sorry, I know this might be a dumb question to you computer experts but I just wanted to know what that meant. Thanks

There is a notice of amount of recording time left. Is that what you mean?

That indirectly tells you how much room you have left on the drive that Audacity is using to store stuff. If you have only one hard drive, then that's the ball game. Most of our machines have two hard drives; one for Windows and the Audacity program and stuff like that, and the other for sound, video, pictures, clips, and production files.

You can tell where Audacity is trying to save stuff by looking at the Preferences.

Preferences > Directories > Temp Directory

Am I being helpful at all? I can't tell where I'm going with this.

Thanks for the response, but is there a way to delete what Audacity has stored? I probably wont use all the storage but I sure have alot of lp's to record.

Audacity will automatically delete it's temporary files when you close the program.

Once you have completed the final production of any Audacity project you should export it to WAV/MP3 AND back the WAV/MP3 up. Then you can recover the space taken up by the Audacity project. Note if you may want to re-edit later then you should export as WAV otherwise you will lose audio quality in the MP3 compression.

When you Save an Audacity project as <project_name> it creates a number of things

1. a top level master project file called <project_name>.aup
2. a folder at the same filing level called <project_name_data>
3. and within the folder a sub-folder structure with lots of little .au files - segments of the recording (mainly audio clips - but a couple of then are graphics files)

You can delete the file <project_name>.aup and its associated folder <project_name_data> - you will likely have several of these projects by now - once you delete them you should see the Remaining Recording Time go up to a better level.
