Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Audacity cannot record on other computer...

Post by GruntOfAction » Mon Aug 09, 2010 11:02 pm

I'm not sure why, but on my current computer I can select a multitude of audio imput devices. (Microphone, Line In, Phone Line, Stereo and Mono) But for some reason, on a "better" computer, I cannot even select the recording imput device.

Here are the specs of the one I can use them on: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... =c00088950

And here are the specs of the one I cannot: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... ct=3245027

Can anyone here explain why on the newer computer, it cannot record?

Are you doing this in the Windows Control Panel, or the Audacity Input Panel? In Vista and Win7, you need to do everything in Windows.

Windows Control Panel

Sometimes you need to restart Audacity even after you do get everything selected correctly.

This is in the Audacity panel. And it's a Windows XP computer also, both of them are.

Your example has Vista running on the second computer.

You still need to be in the Windows Control Panel. Audacity is a complete slave to whatever the computer is doing. Some machines couple the two services so Audacity controls the Windows services. Some don't.

My mistake, the one at my house is Windows XP.

So would it be WCP/Sounds and Audio Devices or Realtek?

Since I'm one of the Mac elves, I'm going to take one giant step backwards and let the Windows elves pick this up.

I do use Windows 2000 and Windows 98 which doesn't do you any good at all.

By "better" computer I assume you mean a more modern one, right? If so this may be the cause of your problem. The choices that you get in that input selector dropdown are entirely dependent on your particular computer, its operating system, the soundcard and its associated drivers.

See this from the Wiki: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... bar_Issues

So it is not uncommon that two particular PCs that you run will offer entirely different options in those boxes.

Are you using XP on both PCs? Are the soundcards in those PCs the same or different? If they are the same, do you have the same versions of the drivers for the soundcards loaded on both PCs?
