all of a sudden 1.3beta won't record

Audacity 1.3 beta recorded great for a couple of days. Then i finished a project, took a break and came back and it wouldn't record. I can't imagine what could have made the difference. I could still hear the sound throuogh the computer. I can still edit the files I already created. But when I push record it just moves with a straight line across the screen and no recording activity.

This was yesterday. I'm using XP. I've heard Microsoft is going to stop updating XP. Could something wierd have happened with xp yesterday?

I don't think a Windows update would have happened without the computer rebooting, and i don't think it rebooted. So it wouldn't be the drivers?
I'm not a techie type. Just somebody trying to copy my cassettes.
Please help. I was deleriously happy to have found some way to save my cassettes, and now I'm all bummed.

If you need more help, tell us how you are recording the cassettes. Is it a USB tape recorder? Or are you connecting the tape recorder to line-in of the computer?
