Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Can't Open Encoding Library

Post by Ter2Rob » Sat Aug 07, 2010 3:15 am

I downloaded vs. 1.2.6 and installed the LAME file to export MP3 files. After scrupulously following the instructions, I get the message: "can't open encoding library". I have redone the procedure numerous times and continue to get the message. Can anyone tell me what the problem could be? I have checked back into the archives and it seems this problem has arisen before, but why do the instructions in the tutorial state that they should work, if they don't? Tiz puzzling ;). Is it still the conventional wisdom that I should install the Beta version?

You can cause serious software instability and damage your show if you stay on Audacity 1.2. Beyond that, the tools for actually editing, filtering, and producing your show are vastly better in the current release -- Audacity 1.3.12.

We had a spirited discussion about whether Audacity 1.2 should continue as the "Current Stable" release. The elves who try to keep this thing running are uniformly against it. Windows is bad enough, under certain conditions, Audacity 1.2 on a Mac won't even run.

But we don't make the weather.

You might find that scrubbing 1.2 and installing 1.3 with its own lame software works a lot better.

Thanks, Koz, for the info. Will uninstall 1.2 and install 1.3.12. But, one further question. Are there certain files that I should ensure are removed, as to NOT cause conflict with the new installation? Seems to me I read such in the archives a while back.

Probably no need to do anything special - in most cases you can just install 1.3.x and don't even need to bother uninstalling 1.2.
